20060924 - Salt Lake City

Note: It has officially been 2 years since I began this Blog

On Sunday (09/17) we drove to from the Grand Tetons to Logan, Utah

It is definitely fall here, trees are turning. As we left the Grand Tetons we began to see more and more red colors instead of the gold of Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons. It is very beautiful. I just kept taking photos.

There was snow in the mountains and snow in the campground.

On Monday (09/18) since the Quilters Travel Companion listed a local Quilt Shop, I decided to go see it.

On Tuesday (09/19) we drove into Salt Lake City.

On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday the weather was cold and rainy so we stayed close to home. Rich spent the time cleaning the Rig and the truck.

Saturday (09/23) was a beautiful day so Rich wanted to finish up cleaning the truck so as soon as he was done I drove to the 2 local quilt shops listed in the Quilters Travel Companion. One was pretty close to our park but the other was out of town a ways. I really like driving with ‘Edith’ (our GPS unit). We call her Edith because Rich might actually follow instructions from a “Great Aunt Edith”. He does get very annoyed with her when she does not recognize addresses (like in Northern Canada). When she recognizes the address, she is great. Rich does not trust her when he is driving the rig so we set her up but if she wants to go a different route than the directions the park has given us, we follow the directions and wait until she catches up. That is one of the cool things about her, if you don’t follow her directions, she will recalculate and tell you how to get where you want from the new location. One of the things that happened to me on the way to the quilt shops was that she wanted me to get on the freeway from a diamond lane. When I passed the onramp, she recalculated and bypassed the freeway all together.

Sunday (09/24) was another beautiful day so decided to go see some model homes to look at furnishings and get ideas for our house. Unfortunately, most of the model homes were closed on Sunday. We were only able to tour 6 although we drove quite a bit around the area.

On Monday (09/24) we took a bus tour of Salt Lake City. It was a historical as well as visual tour. We had hoped to also tour the Great Salt Lake but that tour was cancelled. We drove around the University of Utah campus and saw several of the Olympic venues as well as many other local and Church sights.

We drove to the ‘This is the Place Monument’ This is the monument to the selection of the Salt Lake Valley as the new home for the Mormon Church and it’s people. It had several monuments including this one depicting a family giving thanks.

When the Mormons came to Utah, they came, not in big wagons, but walking beside little ones carrying all their belongingd. It was very surprising to see how very small their wagons were.

We also drove around Temple Square and went to the LDS Conference Center to listen to an Organ Recital.

We went to the Conference Center, to hear the Organ Recital because the Salt Lake Tabernacle is being retrofitted for earthquake safety. The Organ was very beautiful to see as well as to hear.

We had lunch in the Lion House which along with the Beehive House were the homes of Brigham Young in Salt Lake City (while he was governor and Church leader). The Beehive is the symbol of Utah (note the Beehive at the top of the building.

As we were driving around we saw many views of the Oquirrh (pronounced ocre) and Rocky mountains which surround the Salt Lake Basin and the Kennecott Mine.
