20061105 - Tucson

This week we settled into the park in Tucson. Our friends Bob & Connie were staying here near us for the first several days.

On Monday we drove out to see our house in Quail Creek. I posted a photo earlier.

On Tuesday we went to see the Pima Air & Space Museum

The Bumble bee is one of the smallest planes to ever fly. Cool looking but not very comfortable

This is one of the World War II planes. The museum finds and restores these old planes. If, like this one, the plane they have did not see much action, they find a photo of a plane that had lots of action and then paint the one they have to match. In this case they were concerned that the name of the plane might upset some of their visitors so the renamed it. The original name of this plane was the ‘Red Ass’. Makes more sense to me.

This plane was used by both Kennedy & Johnson. We were able to tour the inside. It was surprising to us how un-luxurious it was. Not much like I imagine the current Air Force One to be.

The rest of the week we settled into the park and started looking for furniture, etc. for the house. We have been to several furniture stores. So far we have seen some beds, tables & chairs, fans, closet organizers, and entertainment centers that we both like (a small miracle). We have not yet seen sofa and chairs we agree on but we have lots of time and places to look. It is pretty exciting. We still need to measure everything and get a real idea of what we need.

On Saturday I reconnected with the quilting group here at the park. It was awesome. I recognized several people and they remembered me. (It has been 2 years). While there, I finished sewing on the baby quilt I started earlier this year. Here at the park, one of the members (who ownes a long arm quilting machine) went to the Long Arm Machine Company and convinced them to lend the group a machine. They were willing to lend the machine because the group donates so many quilts to local charities. (300 last year). The woman with the machine has been teaching the group members, 2 at a time to use the machine. After taking 2 lessons you get to make a doggy quilt (2 pieces of fabric, where you practice the quilting techniques). The doggy quilts are then donated to the animal shelter to supply comfort to the cats and dogs. After the doggy quilt, you work to complete another charity quilt and then you get a certificate. Once you have the certificate, you can work alone on other charity quilts or on your own quilts (when the machine is not busy and for $5.00 to the club). I am really looking forward to learning this machine. Tomorrow, Bernina is coming to give the group a class on quilting in general. Can you feel my excitement through the internet?
