20061015 - Portland - Zion National Park

This week we drove from Seattle to Portland; from Portland to Boise; from Boise to Salt Lake City; and Salt Lake City to Zion National Park. I will post the Zion part of the trip in the next blog. While we were in Portland we visited with my sisters, Sandy (and her husband Dale) and Chris (and her husband Steve).

Sunday - Sandy, Chris and I went on a local Art Harvest Studio Tour. We saw a wonderful collage artist who worked with torn paper. Her work was awesome. We also saw an artist who cut paper and made the tiniest quilt designs. Mind you, he was not making quilts, I saw quilts. They were so tiny, so exact, so perfect. Then we saw several potters. I kept seeing things that would be wonderful in our new home. Then all of us had steaks at Chris and Steve’s house.

Monday - Sandy, Chris and I went to a local Quilt store. As usual I enjoyed looking at quilt fabric. The Quilt store was a new store in the area. It is growing fast and had a lot classes that Christine is looking into. Sandy bought a book which gave her some ideas for her photographic art. After the Quilt store we had dinner at a sub shop with Sandy’s daughter Rachel and her daughter Lexie. We had a great time with Rachel and Lexie. Lexie is a real live wire.

Tuesday - Sandy, Chris and I went shopping in McMinnville. After shopping we met the men folk for Pizza dinner.

Wednesday - Sandy had to work, so Chris, Rich, and I went Garden shopping. Chris is an avid gardener and Rich and I are looking for ideas for the house, especially hardscape. We saw a lot of things, many ideas.

Chris and Steve’s property; this area looks and feels like a meadowland.

Sandy and Dale’s property; this area feels like a woodland with nice trails. You can almost see the woodland fairies.

Thursday - we drove to Boise. Since on this trip we were in the truck but not towing the fifth wheel (It is in Salt Lake City, being repaired), I drove the second half of this day’s trip listening to Neil Diamond. When I drive, I usually drive the more interesting half of the trip. When I drive on a boring section of the road without much traffic, I tend to get very sleepy. As I was driving, I was thinking about driving in general. When we first moved to Seattle I rode a bus into the downtown area. When I first started riding the bus, I would end up driving all the cars I could see, in my mind. I would be thinking that traffic would be much smoother if that car would drive slower, and/or that car would drive faster. Eventually I figured out that driving all those cars was not helping my stress level, so I started bringing books or sewing material to occupy my mind. When I began driving to my office, once again I was driving all the cars I could see. Then I began listening to books on tape to prevent me from driving all those other cars. Since we have been traveling I do not have easy access (library) to books on tape so we have been listening to music. What works best for me is music I can sing with, better is music that I really need to belt out (poor Richard & Max).

Friday - we drove to Salt lake City. We saw many, many trucks. This road must be a major truck route. I saw 22 and 26 wheelers, as well as some 3 trailer rigs, including a RV towing a car towing a boat, not something we want to do.

Saturday - we drove to Zion National Park. I took so many pictures here I will have to post another blog.

My goodness, Sandy looks exactly like you. You aren't twins, are you? I guess this won't work while driving, but try pandora.com for music. You can set up your own stations based on an artist you like, and they mix in other music that is similar.
