20061029 - Tucson

This week we drove from Pahrump, to Laughlin, to Buckskin Mountain State Park and finally to Tucson, Arizona.

On Tuesday we drove to Oatman, a ghost town in Arizona near Laughlin. We used Edith (GPS System) to find the place. On the map there were two roads, both looked like dirt so we decided to just follow Edith’s direction. The road was terrible. Oatman has wild burros roaming the street and lots of cute little gift shops. On the return trip we decided to come back on the other road. It was paved the entire way, but Edith had no record of this road. It looked to her like we were driving off road in the desert. After Oatman we took a tour of 9 model homes in Bullhead, Arizona. The houses were quite nice, and the area was beautiful. The houses were more expensive than the homes in Tucson and we like our floor plan better but these were very nice and the area has a lot going for it. It is near the Colorado River, (lots of water sport access), near California, near Nevada, still feels like a small town, but with the growing Casinos in Laughlin, access to good entertainment. We heard from some other visitors that one drawback was the wind.

The road was terrible, dirt washboard, even traveling at 20 mph the truck was shaking so bad my skin was itching. In addition to all that it was steep up and down and major curvy.

Along side the road were these cacti. I really love the look of them.

As soon as we parked in Oatman, the burros came over to check us out.

The burros were under the impression that they owned the street.

I thought it was funny that the lady burros congregated around the Arizona Girls shop.

On Wednesday we drove to see the Laughlin Casinos. There are 9 casinos running along the Nevada sside of the Colorado River. We drove to Harrahs at one end of the casinos on the river, had lunch, then drove to Colorado Belle and from there walked down the river walk by the rest of the casinos and finally took a water taxi back up to the Colorado Belle again.

Harrahs had a nice river beach, from what we could see, the only Casino to have one.

The outside of the Colorado Belle from the land side looks like a show boat.

The river walk was really quite nice.

Looking across the river toward Bullhead (the Arizona side).

The outside of the Colorado Belle from the river side looks like a show boat too.

On Thursday we drove to Buckskin Mountain State Park. We were here before in April, 2005. At that time I published pictures and a write-up of the park so I will not repeat myself. We spent three days here relaxing and enjoying the beautiful weather.

On Sunday we drove to Voyager Park in Tucson. About 80 miles outside of Tucson we had a flat on the fifth-wheel. We did not feel the flat and apparently drove for some time with the flat. Finally, another driver honked us over. We called Good Sam and about an hour later they had fixed the flat. Unfortunately, the spare had a something wrong with its valve so they had to take it back to their shop and repair it. That took another 3 hours. For the first time since we began traveling, we arrived at a park after dark. The good news was that our friends Bob and Connie were waiting for us and they made sure the park knew we were coming and Connie fixed dinner for the 4 of us, very nice as we were pretty tired.

The tattered tire.
