20080104 - Salvador, Brazil

On January 4th the Star Princess docked in Salvador, Brazil, our second stop in Brazil. Salvador is the capitol of Bahia State. North East Brazil is poorer than Southern Brazil. The population is made up mostly of descendants of African slaves and their Portuguese owners and claims to be the ‘real’ Brazil. Southern Brazil has experienced ‘waves’ of immigrants from other areas of the world (Japan, Germany, etc.) We took a tour of Salvador’s old town which was on the upper cliff. It was quite nice, passengers we talked to who stayed in the lower city did not like Salvador very much.

with this wonderful building on the top of the hill


and this amazing view down the hill. Even standing there I could not believe it was real.

Much of the art has an African feel. These were fun Art pieces too big to take home but we loved them,

Our guide told us about some of the African gods who have been somehow integrated into the catholic system. These are some statues of/to these Gods.
