20090129 - Sudoku

This is a picture of my first completed quilt in 2009. It is also a number of other firsts for me. It is the first guild challenge I ever submitted. It is the first quilt I have ever put into a quilt show.

The idea for the quilt came to me some time ago. Several members of my family like to solve puzzles especially sudoku puzzles. One time when we were discussing them I wondered how would they be different if you were working in colors instead of numbers? Would you use different parts of your brain? It not easy to do since most people do not have easy access to colors when working puzzles. From there I went to the idea of making a quilt. It is actually a fairly simple quilt. The most challenging thing in the construction is to not twist the squares.

Then this challenge came up. ‘Something Old is New Again”
This challenge will make you think "outside the box" by taking an old, traditional pattern and adapting it to look like it's from the 21st century. It will get you to use your imagination and creativity to construct an original design. A "then and now" challenge. This challenge is for all levels of quilters.
The colors used are to be shades of black and white (solids and/or prints) with ONE accent color.

The basic quilt pattern is a simple 9-Patch. Thinking that Sudoku puzzles were old I looked them up on the interent and they are fairly recent, so my project was a go. I took a completed puzzle, made a key (fabric to number) and built the quilt, being very careful not twist any of the squares. I decided to do very simple quilting to not take away form the puzzle itself. And now it is done and submitted. WoHoo!
